So Here is what we did

Sorry for the delay. We wanted to wait and do this right. Work has been crazy, plus everyday life...you know how it goes. So, most of you know the background story. To recap, P exploded on Tommy. We freaked out, Tommy was going to try Raptiva, it got pulled off the market, we got scared, I learned about healing through nutrition and we started this immediately. First we ate a 100% raw diet for one week. We purchased the cook book and DVD by Allisa Cohen called, Living on Live Food. During this time Tommy was taking Omega 3, vitamin d, milk thistle and colostrum. We exercised daily, quit smoking and that was it. Within three days of this, Tommy's itching and discomfort decreased. We kept on the raw diet for only one week, because it was pretty difficult to maintain AND EXPENSIVE. If anyone would like raw tips, feel free to ask or Google, there is a ton of info out there. Though this did not work for us long term, I urge others to follow raw for a week. It acts as a means to restart your system towards eating healthy, plus it gives your digestion a rest. It also gives you a new appreciation for the natural flavors in fruits and veggies, something many of us lose eating the standard American diet.

Our approach always followed the idea, that psoriasis cannot live on a healthy body. We pin pointed all areas of Tommy's life that were unhealthy. This included smoking, diet and his dental health. Tommy goes to the dentist more than anyone I know. four to five times per year. Cavities, root canals you name it, he's done it. I suggested Tommy see a Holistic dentist to have his mercury fillings removed as I had read about a link between P and fillings. When Tommy went to the dentist and had his first exam, the dentist inquired about an unhealthy looking tooth in Tommy's mouth. This was a tooth that had a root canal, a filling and a gold crown. This also was a tooth that had a botched root canal done three years ago, that Tommy needed to have corrected. After an x-ray and an analysis, it was determined that this particular tooth was not only infected, but impacting Tommy's immune function. About two weeks after this, Tommy had the tooth removed. I will post a picture of it at a later time, it was disgusting. We let the tooth heal, took a course of antibiotics and the tooth fiasco was over. Though we have yet to remove the fillings, that will be someday in the near future.

After this, Tommy met with a holistic doctor. She recommended Tommy begin a cleanse, he was prescribed the Standard Process Cleanse. Look it up for all the details, too lazy to explain it! Tommy's diet during this time eliminated, wheat, gluten, animal fat, dairy, processed foods, and sugar. Basically anything that was not fruits, veggies or rice. This was a 21 day cleanse and Tommy followed diligently. During this time we purchased a juicer and would juice up to two times per day. Mostly vegetables, with a little fruit for taste. I can give recipes if people would like them, right now I want to just get the process down. Juicing is essential. I believe it helped Tommy, and myself, become healthier individuals.

Soon after this cleanse results started to become increasingly apartment, undeniable actually. It was the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life. We actually did this. After we had heard from so many that it couldn't be done without the use of drugs. WE DID IT! I love looking at his skin now, it is a sign of his strength and our commitment to each other and our health. Psoriasis was the best thing that ever happened to us. Crazy, but true. it gave us health, perspective and appreciation for what truly matters. Now I know what your thinking, it was the tooth, not the diet. Here's the thing. We never thought poor diet caused psoriasis, we thought it was like throwing gasoline on a fire. Diet was medicine, not a correction. We wanted to create an environment in his body that supported healing. This meant getting adequate sleep, exercise and eating well. Without a doubt diet helped. It helped Tommy's state of mind, comfort level and quick results. No I do not know this for sure, but it was what we experienced. Today we eat a plant based diet. Lots of salads, juicing, fruits, and all vegan meals.

This is our life now. I know many want specifics. You want us to tell you what to eat, when to eat, and what to do. It is more about an approach than a diet. Look at your body. What seems off or unhealthy? What have you had consistent trouble with your whole life? Do you eat poorly? smoke? lack exercise? Digestive problems? Lactose intolerant? Do you have poor dental health? Lots of fillings? Repeated infections (strep, tonsillitis)? Make yourself healthy, at the least it will make you mentally more strong and focused while fighting your P and at best it will give you clear skin. We often preach about diet, though it is more about an approach. Fix all that is unhealthy, not just diet. Be patient, see what happens, never give up and ask for help when you need it. This is a place where anyone can ask for our help. We are dedicated to helping as many people as we can rid themselves of this horrendous ailment. We are here for you. Hope this helps. ASK FOR ANY SPECIFICS OR QUESTIONS! Be strong, Be healthy, and most important be happy.

  1. Thanks for posting more information. I checked out Alissa Cohen's website. You guys are lucky you have holistic doctors and dentists where you live. There are absolutely none where I am. Glad to see you are happier and healthier! I really wish I had a holistic doctor nearby. :(

  2. Great to see progress.

Could you give us an indication as to what you were doing wrong before. Maybe outline in a few lines what your usual diet was or drink etc. Might give a good indication to others what they may be doing wrong.

    Cheers

  3. Previously Tommy's diet was fat heavy. Cheese, read meat and fried food. Rarely did he ever ingest fruits or veggies. He would eat in mass quantities as well. He also drank a good deal of soda, also not very good at all! He would also consume processed foods, nothing was organic. Hope that helps!

  4. Jason, where do you live? Are you able to travel to a near by city to see holistic specialists? I hope there is a reasonable option, because I feel guidance by an expect is essential!

  5. Thanks for the reply. To be clear his diet was not nutritous and now it is. It seems that our bodies are malnourished and getting crap pushed through it. I would recomend getting slippery elm powder (not caps) as this lines the gut and prevents, or inhibits, more damage to the intestines which is what all that rough undigestable processed food has done to you. Get them on the mend and I would think it will stand to you. Also look into L glutamine (spl) good for healing it up too.

I wish you all the best.
Fair play for sharing all you have done.

  6. By the way you make the slippery elm as a kind of tea, at least 2 tblsp in 1 large cup of hot H2O.1 in morn before anything and again in the PM. L Glutamine you take in water 2. an hour before anything else. Google it and you will find ;)

  7. ...blink...
It took such a long time for you to say we bought a book, this is what it was. I am a vegan. I tried a juice diet. Right away I got results. My guttate cleared 100% and stayed clear for about 9 months. Then it came back. One day I had one spot on the back of my calf, then another week went I had it on both legs and my elbows, another week I had it 80% full body. It came back worse than I had ever had it. I hadnt changed anything in my diet. I just juiced everything and the same things I had been juicing for those 9 months. Oh I did eat celery the old fashioned way. Good for your bowels. I have never had a cavity in my life. I had chicken pox when I was 3, my parents purposely had me exposed because its better to have it when youre young. Other than that Ive never been sick. Ive never had the flu, Ive never had anything except guttate psoriasis. More background of me, my parents were hippies and I was raised my entire life until I was 19 and went to college on a commune. Im a vegan, a true vegan. Oh I was going to ask if you went true vegan or vegitarian because theres a difference and a lot of people think if they dont eat meat theyre vegan but you also cant have eggs, cheese, milk, butter, honey or any type of biproduct that is connected to an animal including a lot of soaps, lotions and other stuff you wouldnt think its in. Im vegan, always have been my entire life and Im 48 yrs old now. Ive had guttate since I was about 12 so about 36 yrs? I do yoga on a daily basis, I also excersize for about 45 minutes and then I do a 5 mile run every other day. I also meditate at least an hour a day. They say that this is triggered by stress, but I have zero stress so go figure. I am 100% healthy except for having guttate. I have a personal doctor who comes to my home and checks me each week so I have a little extra health care. I only use moisturizer thats 100% completely natural which some days its helps and some days it doesnt.

Im really glad that whatever you have done to change your lifestyle has helped you. It was fantastic the 9 months I was clear. Im a believer that having a healthy lifestyle can keep you healthy. Remember Ive only been sick with chicken pox and never again my whole life from living this way. Never even a cavity, I dont know anyone who can say that. Ive seen so many specialists its not funny and no one, not one doctor can figure out WHY I have this skin disease except that its genetic and I have it because its part of my body makeup.

Im glad you have found some relief and hope your psoriasis stays away longer than mine did. When it comes back, if it comes back, dont panic. Just say to yourself 'kiss my patootie youre not staying'.

By the way I dont take extra vitamins or anything I get everything I need from mother nature. I do drink slippery elm tea twice a day, lovely stuff. I dont drink city water or bottled water (bottled is city water) I live in the country and I have a running live well I get my water from for cooking and drinking.

    Good luck in continued success.

  8. Oh one more thing. If you arent vegan but you want to go vegan, make sure you only grow your own garden and only use organic things for it or that you shop only organic. A lot of things you find on the shelves in stores arent. I have an organic store not far from me where a lot of other hippies shop at even ones I grew up with still go there, most are still alive, that should say something for being vegan!

    Again, good luck to you!

  9. Im popping myself on the forehead right now. Organic is good. Organic food is grown naturally which means that its not necessarily vegan. It can be grown organically using animal byproducts. Vegans dont eat these types grown using that (manure) as it comes from an animal. When growing your own garden you have the option of not using manure, thats why I said grow your own garden. Vegans put zero animal byproducts in or on their bodies. Not everyone can handle being a vegan. I applaud you if you are! Sorry for the lack of information before hand.

  10. Hi Tommy and Molly, I found you guys through Tim's youcantcatchit.com site. I just read through your posts, and am so happy for your results, and I think it's great that you guys are sharing your experience. I've had plaque psoriasis for 19 years, luckily never as severe as Tommy, but it's always been a huge fear that mine could worsen. For a long time I have felt pretty much at the mercy of psoriasis, I've always been relatively healthy, but have a stressful occupation that makes me lose site of diet and exercise. I have noticed when I had everything working (diet/exercise/sleep) that mine improved a lot, almost clearing completely at times. The confirmation about the role that diet plays in this condition that I have found through yours and Tim's site has been needed for a long time, and in the last couple of weeks I've been much more proactive about my health. I think it is already beginning to help. I feel that the 3 biggest factors for me have been carb reduction, flax oil softgel supplements (I'm a vegetarian, so I needed some concentrated Omega 3 source) and outdoor exercise. Time will tell, but I'm hardly using any of my topical ointments at this point, which would normally cause it to flare, but I'm observing that my plaques are flattening and the redness is greatly reduced.

Thanks again, and continued good luck.

  11. Okay, to answer your questions...first, I said far more than this is a book this is what it is. That was one sentence of what I wrote. We have busy lives, this blog is something we care about, but sometimes other things come first. With that said, we will post more if people would like that. We are VEGAN, and I know the difference. I was a vegetarian for 10 years prior to being a vegan, HUGE DIFFERENCE! Now that we have eased in to it, it is far easier to maintain. But for a minute there it was tough. I am sorry your guttate came back, that is awful. We have discussed the possibility of things escalating again. That is what is so awful about this disease, there are no guarantees. Did not know that about the organic produce, I will have to look in to that further. We have also done the slippery elm bark tea, forgot to mention that. And a lot of other things now that I think of it! I have a bag of it my kitchen, I should make Tommy take it again. I agree that it can be immensely helpful to your digestion. I will try and post more specific this weekend. I have had a rough week at work and my attention span at the computer dwindles by the end of the day. Thanks for reading and commenting guys. Hope we can help. Keep lending your tips, we all can use all of the knowledge we can get!! It is nice hearing what has worked and failed for others. Have a great weekend all!!

  13. As vegans go, you all seem realy angry.

Wow, not how I was taught.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I will never understand Vegans. I have a few Vegan friends, one ended up in the hospital due to lack of nutrition ie Protein, low blood sugar and B12 deficient.

This question is for Anonymous with Guttate, have you ever considered upping your protein intake or taking B12 supplements since you are not eating meat? Juicing or strict vegan diets are fine temporarily but long term is dangerous.

Here is a quote from research done on Vegan diets,

"Health gains don't last for most people who stick with a strict vegan or raw food diet, especially when we're talking about adhering to such a program for periods of years. Indeed, all too often the old symptoms and diseases return or, just as worrisome, new health problems begin to manifest as a result of what appear to me to be inherent deficiencies brought about from the lack of various nutritional factors (both known and unknown by science) that are only present in foods from the animal kingdom."

I'm just voicing my concern. It is up to you to take it or leave it. Just to be on the safe side I'd recommend you supplement with B12.

  15. WOW you guys, this is incredible! Congratulations to you and thanks so much for blogging it!

Do you guys know of any useful recipe sites on the net, for meals that don't have any of the ingredients that will cause a psoriasis 'flare'?

I generally eat fairly healthy and am happy to eat loads of veggies. It's the ingredients that i add to meals though, for flavour, that aren't great; even things like soy sauce and tamari have ingredients in them that i am supposed to cut out.

So i guess i have problems finding a variety of interesting meals to cook for myself and end up eating soup, stirfries over and over and over again, which are yum and tasty but that i get sick of too.

    Thanks again!

    Billie

  16. hey billie

sorry for the delay. Check out Christina Cooks (just google it, recipes are on the site and she has a cookbook for sale). She is the best, and my favorite place to go for healthy and delicious recipes. She had cancer a long time ago. She was given a death sentence by her doctors. She adopted a healthy eating regieme and within a year and a half she was cancer free. Today she is still alive and healthy. Now she shows all of us how to make health work in a yummy way!

    good luck!

  17. When it was first confirmed that I had (guttate) psoriasis I had convinced myself that I have this problem because something in my life needed to change, whether it be living healthier, exercising more or destressing. in the beginning it was easy for my o say and believe I was in need of a change but after a few months I lost touch with that thought and began to really beat myself up and question myself why this was happening to me. I have to admit, my psoriasis is not as severe as yours. But after reading your blog I am reminded of my original feelings on the situation and am reinspired to make a concious effort in changing my life. to be more healthy, whatever healthy is for me as an individual. Thank you.

  18. Just playing Devil's advocate for a minute here...could this be due to sun?
Natural sunlight is a well established therapy for psoriasis. I've noticed that my husband's plaque psoriasis gets nearly cleared when we take our 1 week trip to Florida each October. I can see in the pictures that Tommy is tanned in the July pics. What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  19. to respond to a few of the comments....sun was not really a factor for tommy. He was way too embarrassed to let his legs see the sun. He would occasionally do yard work with his shirt off, but not often. He golfs, so that would account for the tan on the arms. His psoriasis cleared every where, even the places sun does not hit (sorry if that is tmi). Sun can help, I believe that. But I don't know how long the positive effects last. And, I am glad we have given some hope to take action with lifestyle when treating psoriasis. It is a hard and long road, but the upside is there are not any negative side effects. Eating and living healthy is always a good thing. Just dont give up!!!

  20. Am gonna try getting myself some milk thistle! I heard tumeric powder (ingested and applied on skin) works too but it makes skin yellow.
